Tiffany Lamps

The man behind the famous Tiffany Lamps was Louis Comfort Tiffany. He used to design stained glass windows in New York and once, while experimenting with some leftover glass pieces, he hit upon the idea of creating lampshades with them. That was in 1899. Today, more than a hundred years later, Tiffany lamps continue to be appreciated for their timeless elegance and exquisite craftsmanship.

A testament to their popularity is the millions of dollars they command at auctions. An original Tiffany lamp is priceless and is an absolute collector's item. All Tiffany lamps have lampshades made of colored glass pieces. The glass pieces are cut into precise shapes and then joined together by copper foil to form a lampshade. Copper foil is both strong and light, making it ideal for the shade.

All Tiffany lamps have lampshades made of colored glass pieces. The glass pieces are cut into precise shapes and then joined together by copper foil to form a lampshade. Copper foil is both strong and light, making it ideal for the shade. One of the fascinating aspects of Tiffany lamps is that each and every shade is carefully handcrafted. The lampshades have designs and motifs that range from very simple to highly complex and intricate. Most motifs are from nature and you will find vibrant flowers, vines, dragonflies, peacocks etc. on the shades.

Each lamp falls into one of seven unique categories, depending on the style and design of its lampshade. The seven categories comprise Favrile, Geometric, Transition to Flowers, Flowered Cone, Flowered Globe, Irregular Lower Border and Irregular Upper and Lower Border. Favrile is the most basic while Irregular Upper and Lower Border is the most complex and therefore the most expensive. Originally the lamps had a base made of bronze but today you can find bases made of a variety of metals and even wood. The lampshades too have evolved but continue to retain the use of colored glass.

Over the years, the elegance and beauty of Tiffany lamps have made them a favorite with homeowners. The multitude of designs and colors on the glass lampshades make them easy to co-ordinate with your decor. A hanging lamp over a dining table creates a warm mood in the dining room. Floor lamps and table lamps bathe the walls and floors of a room with soft, colored light and look particularly good in the living room. Table lamps by the bedside or on buffet tables are another way to add mood lighting to a room. Tiffany lamps can perk up even a dull room with their natural grace.
